This is how I define myself. My profession is my hobby and that is why during all 11 years of my teaching experience, I try to discover, invent and make every single lesson better than the previous one. What encourages me? Of course, my students and understanding that education is a step to light. Educating students, seeing their progress year by year and feeling their warm attitude, motivation and desire to achieve more and more success is the best award for me, as for the teacher.  Moreover, I am lucky enough to teach not only my students, but also to lead preparation of curriculum and educational projects for all the students in school, as a Head of English Department and Quality Manager.

Review: In ‘Wonder,’ a Not-So-Ordinary Boy Makes His Way

Book available at :  goo.gl/1aWMSi

17Wonder1-jumbo-v2

Julia Roberts as Isabel Pullman and Jacob Tremblay as her son, Auggie, in “Wonder,” which arrived to triple the expected ticket sales.CreditDale Robinette/Lionsgate

“I know I’m not an ordinary 10-year-old kid,” says Auggie (Jacob Tremblay), the lead character of “Wonder,” as we see him standing on his bed wearing an astronaut’s helmet. When the helmet is removed, we know how he knows what he knows: His young face is scarred, his earlobes are little flaps and his eyes are seemingly tear-shaped, giving him a perpetual sad-puppy expression.

The good-natured fellow describes his facial birth defects, and the 27 operations he’s endured to deal with them, as “hilarious.” But Auggie is less amused by the prospect of entering the fifth grade, and no longer being home-schooled by his brilliant and loving mother, Isabel Pullman (Julia Roberts).

The Pullmans are an upper-middle-class family living in a fairy-tale New York, one that the film’s location manager conjured up from the most genteel corners of Brooklyn and Manhattan (as well as New Westminster, British Columbia, where the interior of the family’s brownstone was built on a warehouse stage). So Auggie, whose father, Nate (Owen Wilson), has a job that lets him wear a suit and sneakers, is certainly going to a good school. Nonetheless, he knows that he will encounter bullies, and he does. But Auggie is smart, clever and exceptionally good-hearted (at least when he is not being made to feel self-conscious and alone), and has a knack for winning people over.

The movie, based on the popular children’s novel by R.J. Palacio, hews to the book’s multicharacter narration structure. This tactic reminded me of a line in Jean Renoir’s classic “The Rules of the Game” about everybody having their own reasons for their behavior. In Renoir’s movie, that fact is called a “truly terrible thing.” In the world of this film, understanding another person’s reasons is the first step in establishing meaningful communication. During the section of the film narrated by Auggie’s older sister, Via (Izabela Vidovic), you learn why, in an awkward first conversation with her future boyfriend, she impulsively tells him that she’s an only child, despite the fact that she loves and ardently protects her little brother.

Directed by Stephen Chbosky, who wrote the screenplay with Steve Conrad and Jack Thorne, the movie has a cast that’s wonderful from top to bottom. As Auggie’s parents, Ms. Roberts and Mr. Wilson are doing things we love to see those actors doing. (Ms. Roberts lets loose with her trademark ebullient laugh at least once, and Mr. Wilson explains life’s issues to Auggie in a droll drawl.) All the young people in the ensemble, anchored by Mr. Tremblay’s Auggie, are perfect.

“Wonder” is that rare thing, a family picture that moves and amuses while never overtly pandering. Mr. Chbosky’s 2012 feature, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” split the difference between the sentimental heart-tugging associated with more standard Hollywood fare, and the intelligence and intimacy often associated with independent films. He accomplishes something very similar, and equally worthwhile, here.

how children learn at different stages of development

outsourcing-product-development

This section looks at how children learn at different stages of development and how activities in the classroom need to address their cognitive, motor, language and social development.

Children between four and twelve years old are very different as language learners, so here we take a look at how children learn at different stages of development and how activities in the classroom need to address their cognitive, motor, language and social development.

Obviously children do not all fit neatly into categories and their development will depend on their personality, maturity and previous learning experiences. You will no doubt recognise how your own students fit the descriptions. The age groups will be grouped as: 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12 year old

Children: 4-6 year-olds

4-6

Chants

Chants are great as children

  • learn to work together
  • pick up chunks
  • get to listen to lots of meaningful language
  • have a reason to use English
  • find them funny
  • move their body
  • enjoy repeating them

Chants are easy to make up. I made this one up for my 5-6 year olds. They had already begun learning animals. We chanted it together and did actions for the different animals. (pretended to splash water etc)

  • My name’s Fred and I’m a frog – jump, jump, jump
  • My name’s Kate and I’m a cat – miaow, miaow, miaow
  • My name’s Fergie and I’m a fish – splash, splash, splash
  • My name’s Micky and I’m a mouse – squeak, squeak, squeak
  • My name’s Benny and I’m a bird – flap, flap, flap

This is a lovely chant with a rhythm that children enjoy. They can stretch their arms out to show ‘big’ and bring their hands close together to show ‘little’. It also helps to develop:

Motor skills – children will enjoy colouring in the pictures that come with the chant. Colouring demands concentration, eye/hand coordination and hand control – all important pre-writing skills

Word recognition – when beginning word recognition they can draw a line between the animal words – cat, mouse etc and the and the pictures

 Songs

Classic songs like Old MacDonald had a farm (see related pages below)are very popular with young children. This is a version of the song that encourages students to produce long vowel sounds. It also practises the numbers one to four.  Farms are pretty universal. Young students enjoy making the animal noises and farm animals are a nice lexical set.

To create a nice wall display, get children to draw their favourite farm animal and the teacher (or a child who draws quickly and finishes their animal) can draw a big farm to paste the animals onto. More animals can be added later as well as a farmer etc. Once they begin writing, students can label the different animals.

Stories

There are many story books based on animals. Children love listening to stories about animals especially If there are colourful, child-friendly visuals to help them follow the story. You can also use cuddly animal toys while story-telling to get and hold the children’s attention.

Games

Children all love games. 4 – 6 year olds have still to develop cooperative skills, so introducing games that involve turn-taking helps to develop these skills. Do not despair if they get impatient or want to take each other’s turns – they are still learning to be less egocentric and need lots of opportunities to allow these skills to develop (see related pages The animal game below).

The first version of the game is appropriate for 4 – 6 year olds as they simply have to count out the steps of the game according to what their dice lands on and then name the animal on the spot.

Cutting and colouring

See related pages How things work below. The students get to create a herd of elephants by cutting out an elephant and naming him/her. They can also colour it in. They can practise the ‘What’s your elephant called?’  & ‘He’s / She’s called….’

Children: 7-9 year-olds

7-9

Chants

Children at this age group still love chants, but can add their own verses too. This stimulates their creative skills and gives them a sense of achievement when they can produce their own (see Five little speckled frogs song in related pages below).

World knowledge

The quiz at the bottom of the page requires not just linguistic knowledge, but also knowledge about animals.

Wall displays

By now many children are developing their writing skills and becoming proficient drawers. They also get a great sense of achievement from seeing what they have created.

A mini-project on animals is easy to set up. Each child chooses an animal they like. They draw a picture of the animal and write sentences based on a model* provided by the teacher. The pictures are neatly mounted on the classroom walls. Invite parents in too to see these lovely displays.

model:

  • …………… is a big/small animal
  • …………… lives in the jungle / on a farm / in my house
  • ………….. eats leaves / other animals/ …………..
  • ………….. can fly / run / swim etc etc

Children: 10-12 year-olds

10-12

Projects

By now it is clear that students have very different approaches to learning and have distinct preferences and interests. A project on animals can ensure all are satisfied.

Students can choose to work independently or with a partner(s)

Get students to choose an animal, or the creative ones can create a new one!

Students choose whether to create a wall display, a book or a presentation on their animal

Their work can include illustrations, their own or ones they find

Their project can be a factual description about the animal including information found in books, the internet etc or it can be a story about the animal. It could also be a poster calling for conservation of a particular species

Give a time limit – say 2 or 3 lessons for them to prepare their work and then it can either be displayed, shared or presented

This is especially good in a mixed ability class. Students who are not so keen on writing can create something more visual and very enthusiastic students have more scope for their imagination and language skills

Fantastic Beasts

Fantastic_Beasts_and_Where_to_Find_Them_poster

“Fantastic Beasts and where to find them takes us to new era in J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world, decades Harry Potter and half  a world away.”

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a 2001 book written by British author J. K. Rowling (under the pen name of the fictitious author Newt Scamander) about the magical creatures in the Harry Potter universe. The original version purports to be Harry Potter’s copy of the textbook of the same name mentioned in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (or Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in the US), the first novel of the Harry Potter series. It includes several notes inside it supposedly handwritten by Harry, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, detailing their own experiences with some of the beasts described, and including in-jokes relating to the original series.

In a 2001 interview with publisher Scholastic, Rowling stated that she chose the subject of magical creatures because it was a fun topic for which she had already developed a lot of information in earlier books. Rowling’s name did not appear on the cover of the first edition, the work being credited under the pen name “Newt Scamander”, who, in the books, wrote this textbook as seen on Harry’s supply list for his first year.

“Harry Potter” fans who are missing the wizarding world introduced in J.K. Rowling’s books may be comforted by the newly released images from “prequel” film “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” which takes place in New York 70 years before we meet Harry and his friends.

“Fantastic Beasts” is based on the Hogwarts textbook of the same name and follows the adventures of its author, Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), who is described as a “magizoologist” — someone who studies magical creatures. The adaptation was penned by Rowling — marking her first screenplay — and directed by David Yates, who helmed the last four “Harry Potter” movies.

Harry Potter and the Cursed child

xHP.jpg.pagespeed.ic.vSFZQEecSQ

It is the eight story in the Harry Potter series and the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage.

Part l

Act I

The play begins on Platform 9 3/4 and picks up from where Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows left off, with a few modifications. Albus Potter and Rose Granger-Weasley say goodbye to their parents and board the train. Harry Potter, Ginevra Weasley, Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger wonder whether their children will be okay. Ron remembers his time at Hogwarts and wishes he could be going.

Albus and Rose wander around the train looking for a compartment to sit in. Rose reminds Albus that their parents met on the train, so decides that finding the right compartment to sit in is very important as they too could meet their lifelong friends here. They open the door to one compartment and find Scorpius Malfoy sitting there. They shyly introduce themselves and Scorpius makes a joke about their parents rivalry. Albus and Scorpius get along very well, but Rose leaves to look for another compartment because she thinks that Scorpius is nothing but trouble. Albus stays and the two kids become friends, sharing stories and sweets on the journey to Hogwarts.

When the train reaches Hogwarts, the students attend the Sorting ceremony. The Sorting Hat places Rose in Gryffindor, and both Scorpius and Albus in Slytherin. Albus sits next to Scorpius at their table. Unfortunately, Albus is mocked by the other students for being a Potter in Slytherin as every Potter had been placed in Gryffindor. He does not have a natural gift for magic and struggles at his first flying lesson, where the other children call him the “Slytherin Squib.”
