Developing Visual Literacy in the language classroom

In a world where the vast majority of texts our students are encountering and dealing with are visual texts or multimodal texts that use visuals, the importance of visual literacy increases greatly. In this practical webinar, Kieran Donaghy explores what visual literacy is, why it is important in language education and explore a number of simple, tried and tested viewing frameworks that help students become more active and effective viewers of photo, paintings, films and videos, using examples from the course Kieran co-authored, Language Hub.

Advancing Learning: Fast-forward

Bringing lesson outcomes to life

English Book Education is pleased to invite you to another professional development event organised by Macmillan Education.

Lesson outcomes are descriptions of the specific knowledge, skills or expertise that the student will get from a lesson. In this webinar, we will explore why lesson outcomes greatly benefit both teachers and students, how to identify and write effective lesson outcomes, and a number of activities – including examples from Macmillan Education’s course Language Hub.

About the Speaker

Kieran Donaghy is a freelance award-winning writer, international conference speaker and trainer. He is the author of books for students and teachers of English as a foreign language. His publications include Film in Action (Delta Publishing), Writing Activities for Film (ELT Teacher2Writer) and Video, The Image in ELT (ELT Council) and Language Hub (Macmillan). He trains teachers in Barcelona and online at his specialist teacher development institute, The School for Training. His website Film English has won a British Council ELTons Award, an English Speaking Union Award and the MEDEA Award. He is the founder of The Image Conference and co-founder of the Visual Arts Circle.

The Child’s Language Journey: From Reception, to Production, to Communication

Language is crucial to a young child’s development, for communicating, for building relationships and for making sense of the world.

About the Speaker

Lucy Crichton graduated in Drama, Art and Design and Teaching English as a Foreign Language. She has been a teacher for 28 years and during that time have also been involved in teacher training. She writes for the primary classroom and these projects have taken me to countries in South America, Europe and Asia.  Lucy is the founder of The Secret Garden English School in Florianopolis, where she teaches children and teenagers with a focus on living the language through practical projects, music art, drama, gardening and cooking. Brazil is her adopted home.

About the Speakers

Zarina Subhan originally qualified as a scientist, she has been working in the field of ELT for over 30 years. She has taught at all levels, in both private and government institutions and worked worldwide as a teacher and teacher educator. Having worked in the science, educational and development sectors, her interests are the neurology of learning; CLIL; continuing professional development for teachers; inclusive and sustainable education.

Harry Waters has been involved in English teaching for over 14 years. His passion for teaching and obsession with the planet led him to create Renewable English an online English course, providing free classes and materials aimed at raising climate change awareness across the globe. Matthew Hayes, BA (Oxon), MA (SOAS), is a doctoral researcher at the Institute of Education in London. His current research concerns Global Citizenship Education in English language textbooks and he has previously written on Robert Kennedy and the Cuban Missile Crisis.
