Magdalena Kania

“Lessons that really work – how to make your students flourish”

Learning a language is not linear. Learners go through different phases when their learning goes smoothly and moments when they get stuck. What I have noticed throughout my teaching career, learners can get discouraged by the downs. However, with proper tools and well-designed lessons we can help them to overcome the challenges and give them a lot of support in developing as learners.

Tbilisi Time: 15:15 – 16:15

Bartek Janiak

“Assessment as part of a learning journey”

Learning is a journey, but not an easy one. There are tests, mentors, friends, and foes along the way. All important, all to serve a purpose. All aimed at helping students to progress. Assessment plays a key role in this process, and when introduced appropriately, helps rather than hinders progress. Join us to discover the possibilities of the Pearson assessment portfolio and find the best fit for your teaching reality.

Each participant will receive the certificate of attendance and a digital conference pack.

NGL Webinar: Heads or Tails? Making the blended classroom work for you

Join National Geographic Learning event exclusively for Georgia!

With the move to online teaching over the past 18 months, the flipped classroom model as a way of facilitating a blended approach has grown in popularity. Indeed, it could be argued that it is a necessity to ensure successful learning in an online environment. In this session we’ll start by defining what exactly we mean by a blended classroom and the benefits that using a flipped approach can have. We’ll then look at how this can work on a practical basis with examples taken from National Geographic Learning’s Life 2nd Ed. and Perspectives series.

Life

To bring the world to the classroom and the classroom to life

Welcome to the second edition of Life. It’s been a fantastic experience to use the feedback we’ve collected from teachers and learners from around the world to revisit the first edition and build on its strengths. There are three things that a second edition gives an opportunity for: to bring in fresh content; to adjust existing content to ensure it delivers a book’s underlying methodological principles; and to refine and improve exercises according to user feedback. What does this mean for the second edition?

  • New and updated content, including exciting original video and fresh National Geographic stories and articles.
  • By linking this rich, global content more clearly to learners’ everyday lives, new ’My Life’ speaking tasks are even more personalised and relatable.
  • Revised grammar spreads make learning more accessible and more effective.  These spreads are reinforced with a newly extended grammar practice at the back of the student books.
  • The Critical Thinking activities are now part of a more fully-articulated syllabus, founded on Bloom’s taxonomy of lower and higher order thinking skills.
  • Techniques to make learning more memorable, already present in Life‘s use of images and engaging content, have now been refreshed and extended throughout the unit and in the review sections.

PERSPECTIVES

An Open Mind, a Critical Eye, and a Clear Voice in English

Perspectives is a four-level series in American and British English that teaches learners to think critically and to develop the language skills they need to find their own voice in English. The carefully-guided language lessons, real-world stories, and TED Talks motivate learners to think creatively and communicate effectively.

In Perspectives, learners develop an open mind, a critical eye and a clear voice in English.

An Open Mind

Perspectives encourages students to develop an open mind by looking at one powerful idea in ways that they may have never considered before.

Every unit explores one idea from different perspectives, giving students opportunities for practicing language as they look at the world in new ways.

A Critical Eye

In Perspectives, learners develop a critical eye for analyzing, evaluating, and synthesizing information in order to develop their own opinions and ideas.

Students think critically in every lesson while listening, reading, writing, and participating in classroom discussions.

A Clear Voice in English

Learners build the language skills and strategies they need to develop a clear voice in English.

Learners are encouraged to respond regularly using new language as they learn about important ideas that affect us all in a global society.

National Geographic Learning materials with TED Talks help English learners develop a voice of their own through:

  • Inspiring ideas to motivate learning

Impact

Impact helps teenage learners to better understand themselves, each other, and the world they live in.

By encouraging self-expression, global citizenship, and active participation, Impact motivates students to explore who they are and who they want to be, all while learning English!

Learn English with National Geographic Explorers

National Geographic Explorers—photographers, scientists, artists, and more—are featured as real-life role models who are making a difference in the world. Each unit highlights one Explorer to inspire future global citizens and promote 21st century skills.

Explorers form the backbone of the series and appear in readings, videos, and activities throughout Impact.

Explore the World

Impact covers a vast range of subjects that are integrated throughout the course. In every unit students are immersed in a topic that has been specifically chosen to engage, inspire and stimulate to better prepare students for further academic success.

Learners explore real people and places from around the world and the important issues that affect us all to give them a global perspective of the world.

Video lessons feature footage from National Geographic and other sources, as well as animated infographic videos created specifically for Impact to provide students with high-quality visual input.

Become an Active Participant

Student-choice activities empower learners to become active participants in the classroom.

“Make an Impact” pages at the end of each unit give students 3 different projects to choose from. This is a great way to give students ownership over their learning and put them in the driver’s seat.

“Express Yourself” lessons reinforce the language and knowledge taught in the units.
