Elene Tsomaia – Christmas Essay

The Speckled Band is one of my favorite books that we have read in Book Club so far. The book is about mysteries and solving crimes. In my opinion this book teaches critical thinking and communication skills. These form part of the attributes needed to be a good detective.

Most teenagers today probably prefer watching movies instead of reading books. When you watch movies you see what the characters and scenery looks like. In movies everything is characterized. I prefer reading books instead of watching films, because every detail is outlined in books.  When you read books you develop your imagination. When I read books I feel like I am there experiencing everything. When I watched a few movie versions they were different from the book version. When I read the book versions, everything was outlined in detail. This is the case with Sherlock Holmes, Corpse Bride and many others. My favorite character from The Speckled Band is Sherlock Holmes. He is clever, loves his work, has critical thinking skills, is attentive, insightful, serious and he mostly likes to work alone. I think he is also kind. I would change the character by making him more communicative as well as spending more time on himself.

Sherlock Holmes’ Christmas Mystery

It was Christmas, but it was a normal day for Sherlock sitting in his office, smoking a cigar and waiting for clients. This went on for a few hours and no clients showed up so he decided to go home and rest. He went home and got ready for bed, but he heard the sound of the phone ringing, he answered the phone and he heard that someone kidnapped 10 children from the kindergarten. Sherlock grabbed his cigar and ran towards the scene of the crime. At the scene of the crime, he found something strange. He found 10 wrapped boxes. When he opened the boxes he saw children’s drawings on the paper. Sherlock took these papers to his office and he thought for a long time about what this was and what it was meant to be.

After a few hours, he heard the news that 2 more children have been kidnapped from the second kindergarten in the city. They found two boxes. Inside these boxes were children’s drawings too. Finally Sherlock understood this riddle, he put drawings together and finally he found the phrase: “If you want the children to be alive come and find me in a place children love.” Sherlock finally remembered that they would love the circus, but which circus? He went to every circus in town with some policemen. Finally they found the circus where the children were held and he found the criminal too. He tried to escape, but Sherlock confronted him with a gun. He was arrested and the children were returned to their parents.
