Ani Akhaladze – Christmas Essay

It was the 2nd of October, 2022, and it was my birthday. I woke up to the sound of birds chirping outside my window and a feeling of excitement in the air. I couldn’t wait to see what the day had in store for me.

I got out of bed and went to the kitchen to make myself a cup of coffee. As I sat down at the table, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of déjà vu. It was as if I had experienced this exact same moment before. But I shook the feeling off and attributed it to the excitement of my birthday.

I spent the morning opening presents from my family and friends. There were clothes, books, and even a new camera, but the most special gift was a trip to Japan that my best friend had planned for us. I couldn’t believe my luck, I had always wanted to visit Japan.

After finishing my coffee, I decided to take a walk around my neighborhood. The trees were turning colors, and the air was crisp. I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the beautiful day. As I walked, I noticed that everything seemed a bit too familiar, like I had walked the same path before. But I shrugged it off and continued to enjoy the beautiful autumn day.

As the day progressed, I went to lunch with my family and then spent the afternoon visiting friends. Each interaction felt eerily familiar, like I had already lived through these exact moments, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on what was wrong.

Later that evening, I had a dinner party with some close friends. We laughed, shared stories, and had a great time, but again, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I had experienced this exact night before.

After dinner, I went to bed, but I couldn’t sleep. I kept replaying the events of the day in my mind, trying to figure out why everything felt so familiar. And then it hit me: this was the exact same day that I had lived through last year, my birthday, the 2nd of October 2021.

I couldn’t believe it, I was stuck in a time loop, living the same day over and over again. I lay in bed, unsure of how to break the cycle, but then I realized that even though I was living the same day over and over again, my interactions with others, my thoughts and my decisions can change the outcome.

I decided to make the most of my repeating birthday. I called my friends and family to tell them what I had realized and to plan new things to do with them, new conversations, new activities. I made a promise to myself to always find joy in every situation, and to make the most of every moment. And as I fell asleep, I couldn’t wait to wake up the next day, my birthday, the 2nd of October 2022.

From that day on, I made it my mission to make every day the 2nd of October, a day to celebrate, to cherish, and to make the most of every moment. Because even though the day was repeating, my life was not, and I was determined to make the most of it.
