Though we talk often about learners and their roles, it\u2019s just as important to pay attention to the teachers themselves. According to Hoyle\u2019s and Harmer\u2019s lists, there are a number of roles ascribed to the teacher in a general educational setting:<\/p>\n

• A representative of society (teachers morals)<\/li>\n
• A judge (gives marks)<\/li>\n
• A resource (conveys knowledge)<\/li>\n
• A helper (provides guidance for student difficulties)<\/li>\n
• A referee (resolves conflicts)<\/li>\n
• A detective (catches rule breakers)<\/li>\n
• An object of identification (has traits that students imitate)<\/li>\n
• A limiter of anxiety (helps students with impulses)<\/li>\n
• An ego-supporter (helps with students\u2019 self-confidence)<\/li>\n
• A group leader (establishes group climate<\/li>\n
• A parents surrogate (acts as object of bids for attention)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

  Knowing one\u2019s role can be very motivational as a teacher, which is why it\u2019s important to be familiar with these kinds of lists.<\/p>\n
