He served as a lieutenant in the Royal Marines for two years, but World War II ended before he could go into combat.<\/p>\n<p>2. He\u00a0taught English at the University of Poiters and then to Spetsai, a Greek island, where he taught at Anorgyrios College.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 220px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fowlesbooks.com\/images\/32reunionforanna1968.jpg\" width=\"210\" height=\"230\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fowles with his family<\/p><\/div>\n<p>3. His first published work allowed him to retire with his wife and her daughter to Lyme Regis in Dorset, England.<\/p>\n<p>4. In 1966, he envisioned a woman in black Victorian garb standing on a quay and staring out at the sea.\u00a0The vision recurred, became an obsession, and led eventually to<em>\u00a0The French Lieutenant&#8217;s Woman<\/em>,\u00a0a Victorian novel in manner and mores, but contemporary and existential in viewpoint.<\/p>\n<p>6.
