Jerome\u00a0of a boating holiday on the\u00a0Thames\u00a0between\u00a0Kingston\u00a0and\u00a0Oxford.<\/p>\n<p>The book was initially intended to be a serious travel guide\u00a0with accounts of local history along the route, but the humorous elements took over to the point where the serious and somewhat sentimental passages seem out of place in the mostly\u00a0comic novel. One of the most praised things about\u00a0<i>Three Men in a Boat<\/i>\u00a0is how current it seems to modern readers \u2013 the jokes seem fresh and witty even today.<\/p>\n<p>The three men are based on Jerome himself and two real-life friends, George Wingrave and Carl Hentschel, with whom he often took boating trips.
